Hermanis Mattisons - better known outside of his native Latvia as Herman Mattison - was not only one of the leading players in the 1930s but one of the very finest composers of his day.

Just one year after defeating Alekhine, Rubenstein and Vidmar at the 1931 Olympiad, Mattison succumbed to tuberculosis at the age of 37. This book by T.G. Whitworth is a testament to the Latvian's elegance when composing endgame studies, with sixty of his studies demonstrated.
