Every night for eleven hours, Wren Calloway turns a lamp for ships that no longer need it.
Scarp Light stands on a rock in the North Atlantic, forty-one metres of Victorian granite built around a hole. The Board automated it years ago, but a human still has to wake the lens, take the readings and log the numbers. Wren is the human. Her predecessor, Edwin Marsh, vanished from the rock eleven years ago and was never found.
Then she opens the Reading Book and finds the next line already written. The ink is fresh. The block capitals are Marsh?s.
The clocks on the rock agree with the clocks on shore, until they don?t. Something below the lamp room is running slow, and it is slowest where the beam goes down the old light well. Marsh left a journal in the lower lamp room, written in a time that does not match hers. Nine keepers are on the Board?s Roll as lost. The Board?s Director has arrived to make sure nobody asks why. And the lamp must keep turning, whatever it is doing to the hours.
The Slow Light is a lighthouse thriller built on hard science: a claustrophobic, slow-tightening story of isolation, a missing father?s daughter, and a woman who must go down into the one place where the hours stop agreeing.
