Moy was a master printmaker. His early works, small but complicated woodcuts on soft luminous papers, were immediately accepted by artists, curators, and the purchasing public. A painterly quality, so important to his entire graphic output, is evident in much of this work and is all the more special because it is captured in color wood block prints that require great sophistication and skill from the artist. As Moy’s career continued to develop, his interest in capturing spatial relationships of shapes and forms in his compositions, was heightened by the role color plays in energizing these elements. This trend continued for a number a years and could also be found in his cardboard relief prints.

Born in Canton, China, Moy emigrated to the United States in 1931. In the early 1950s he began a teaching career that included time at Pratt, Columbia, Cooper Union and several other schools, as well as his own school, the Seong Moy School of Painting and Graphic Arts in Provincetown, MA. He won numerous awards over his long career as an artist and his work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions and is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum and the New York Public Library.
