Antique Dutch painting from the second half of the 19th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting an interior scene with characters, signed copy of the famous masterpiece Paternal Instruction by Gerard Ter Borch (1617-1681). Painting signed lower right J. C. Mertz (see photo) referable to the painter Johann Cornelius Mertz (1819-1891) lacking authentication. The painter is good at faithfully reproducing various elements of the masterpiece which inspired him to recreate the painting from the golden age, modifying some aspects. In fact, on the table on the left we find a carpet (instead of the books and the candle), the color of the fabrics of the stool and of the seat on which the girl's father sits change color. The background also changes and, on the right, the dog is not inserted (see photo). The characters' clothing is detailed and painted with great skill, the silvery shades of the girl's dress are amazing (see photo). Artwork adorned with an ancient frame, restored during the 20th century, structurally sound and in good condition. Painting that has undergone conservative restoration, relining and color recovery in some places (see photo). Frame on which there are still visible signs of lacquer wax, left by previous owners, with stamps that are no longer legible. Painting in good condition. Sight size H 58,5 x W 71,5 cm.
