Esta figura, grande y poderosa, tiene una forma de estilo cubista que transmite la solidez y la fuerza de un espíritu ancestral protector. El clarividente, también llamado “Nganga”, dotó a esta figura tallada de poderes espirituales al tratar su cabeza, estómago y brazos con sustancias simbólicas - animales, vegetales y minerales - y atando con ingredientes similares el pecho, el cuello y los pies.

El pueblo Songye utiliza estas figuras como dispositivos para alejar a los enemigos de los hogares y de las aldeas y para atraer la fertilidad y la riqueza. Se asocia a estas estatuas el estar imbuidas de energía mágica. Las imágenes más grandes, como ésta que se vende, están destinadas a proteger a pueblos enteros. Las que miden menos de 40 cm. de altura están destinadas al uso individual.

La figura está tallada con una cabeza ovoide típica con una mandívula cuadrada y prominente; una boca ancha y abierta con labios hundidos; una nariz en forma de sagital; y ojos grandes en forma de almendra. Los hombros son cuadrados y los brazos alargados.

Obra con huellas de la edad y de uso ritual, con un par de pequeñas grietas. Escultura de valor museístico que puede alcanzar los 12.000 euros en casas de subastas internacionales.

Grand Nkisi Songye fetish Congo 150 years

This large and potent figure is constructed in a cubistic style which conveys the solidity and strength of a protective ancestor-spirit. The diviner Nganga, has charged this carved figure with spiritual powers by attaching symbolic substances - animal, vegetable and mineral - into its head, abdomen and arms, and by attaching bundles of similar ingredients to its chest, neck and feet.

Such figures were used by the Songye people of the Congo as protective devices to ward off enemies from individual households and villages, and to bring fertility and wealth. Such statues were seen as being imbued with magical energy and were used only by village sharmans. The large size of this piece is associated with the protection of an entire village.

The figure is carved with a typical ovoid head with a square, jutting jaw, a wide, apened mouth with under-hung lips, a sagittate-shaped nose, and large almond-shaped eyes.

Work with traces of age and ritual use, with a couple of small cracks.
