Pareja Cornucopias, Barroco, Crtistal Policromado, S.XVIII - Escuela Andaluza

Pareja de cornucopias barrocas, con cristales pintados, s. XVIII, Origen Español, escuela andaluza (Córdoba).

Exquisita pareja de Cornucopias en madera tallada y sobredorada con oro fino. Decorada con motivos plenamente barrocos y exuberantes como son los roleos y las figuras ondulantes y vegetales. Cada pieza aguarda un interesante cristal pintado original apoyado sobre tablas de madera.

Están realizados siguiendo los parámetros estéticos de la Escuela Española del siglo XVIII, con representaciones iconográficas muy típicas de esta época como son los santos. En este caso, los temas representados, con gran realismo y naturalidad, son una escena de Santa Ana con la Virgen María Niña; y el otro cristal pintado posee a Santa Catalina de Alejandría, con los atributos propios de su iconografía como la cruz y la serpiente.

Conservan el marco original de excelente factura, con los diferentes roleos dispuestos elegantemente y que cuenta también con la concha de Santiago en la parte superior. En la parte de atrás se puede observar la estructura de en madera y el gancho en hierro forjado que se ha pensado para sostener tan voluptuoso ornamento.

Exhibe un dorado de muy buena calidad y brillo gracias a la técnica utilizada para aplicarlo. Para dorar la madera se debe aplicar, tras primero ser tratada y pintada si fuera requerido, una capa de bol que es una arcilla de color ocre que ayuda a adherir el pan de oro además de enfatizar su color. Se colocan cuidadosamente finas hojas de pan de oro que son bruñidas con piedra ágata para que queden extendidas y perfectamente lisas.

La técnica del vidrio pintado

Estas son unas piezas de gran calidad e interesante técnica de vidrio pintado, un formato muy curioso que no vemos tan a menudo pero que resulta de un fascinante brillo e intensidad de los colores. El cristal se pinta del revés, es decir, invertido para que al mirar la imagen se vea del derecho. Además, se debe empezar pintando los detalles y las figuras más cercanas e ir avanzando hasta colorear el fondo, este proceso es totalmente a la inversa de la manera tradicional de pintar. La pintura sobre vidrio es una técnica pictórica que tuvo gran presencia tanto en España como en Hispanoamérica durante la Edad Moderna, aunque sus orígenes datan a la Antigüedad. Se popularizó durante la era bizantina y altomedieval, aunque el gran “boom” fue durante el clasicismo y el barroco para la representación de iconos religiosos, retratos y paisajes.

Tiene algunos desperfectos que se han indicado en las imágenes, algo propio del paso de tiempo.

Pair of Baroque cornucopias, with painted glass, 18th century, Spanish origin, Andalusian school (Cordoba).

Exquisite pair of cornucopias in carved wood gilded with fine gold. Decorated with exuberant baroque motifs such as scrolls, undulating and vegetal figures. Each piece holds an interesting original painted glass supported on wooden boards.

They are made following the aesthetic parameters of the Spanish School of the 18th century, with iconographic representations very typical of this period, such as saints. In this case, the subjects represented, with great realism and naturalness, are a scene of Saint Anne with the Virgin Mary Child; and the other painted glass has Saint Catherine of Alexandria, with the attributes typical of her iconography, such as the cross and the serpent.

They conserve the original frame of excellent workmanship, with the different scrolls elegantly arranged and which also has the shell of Saint James at the top. On the back, we can see the wooden structure and the wrought iron hook that has been designed to hold such a voluptuous ornament.

It exhibits a very good quality gilding and shine thanks to the technique used to apply it. To gild the wood, after first being treated and painted if required, a layer of bowl, which is an ochre-coloured clay that helps to adhere the gold leaf as well as emphasising its colour, is applied. Thin sheets of gold leaf are carefully applied and burnished with agate stone so that they are spread out and perfectly smooth.

The technique of painted glass

These are high quality and interesting pieces of painted glass, a very curious format that we do not see so often but which results in a fascinating brilliance and intensity of colour. The glass is painted upside down, i.e. reversed so that when you look at the image you see it right side up. In addition, one should start by painting the details and the closest figures and work one's way up to the background, this process is completely the reverse of the traditional way of painting. Glass painting is a pictorial technique that had a great presence in both Spain and Latin America during the Modern Age, although its origins date back to Antiquity. It became popular during the Byzantine and early medieval periods, although the great boom came during the Classical and Baroque periods for the representation of religious icons, portraits and landscapes.

It has some flaws that have been indicated in the images, something typical of the passage of time.
